The state of the WiX toolset, October 2010.

After five months of heads down coding on Burn in WiX v3.6, it is past time for me to take a deep breath and look around. A quick glance tells me that we are doing okay but we are late. The core contributors of the WiX toolset are working hard but we are fragmented so progress is slow. Let's look at where we are at with WiX v3.5 and WiX v3.6 in detail.

WiX Working Group video, conf call etiquette.

Conference calls. Given the distributed development world we live in today, it's likely you've experienced at least one. I've spent a lot more time in them over the last year since I ended up in a major cross team collaboration role. Thus, when Stephen Walli linked to this video, I chuckled more than twice. Mike summed it up best, "That is so true..."

Last weekend I attended a baby shower for a good friend and former roommate. Then, earlier this week, Heath sent me this video. I thought it was too perfect not to use this week. It turned out Heath was the only one in the room tonight with a kid but as I told my friends last weekend, I expect my days are numbered.

WiX Working Group video, the sound of sorting.

K, Reid and I are playing through Halo 3:ODST on Legendary. Its my attempt to keep in touch with a couple of the original developers on the WiX toolset since our paths don't cross much any longer. Over chat, Reid mentioned a video he saw recently where someone assigned sounds to swaps and recorded the results of various sorting algorithms.
