Thirty Nine

Today I turn 39. This is the birthday where everyone asks you if you are ready for 40. After being asked that question several times, I realized I don't really think about my birthday that way. My birthday is a point where I reflect on the past year and look to what the days of the next year might bring. I'll deal with 40--whatever that means--when I turn 40. Today I look review.

I took a peek at 36, 37 and 38. Each of those felt like the continuation of the year before. One long 3 year review. Each one a step closer to the plan. That is why they were titled: 36, ++36, 36+=2.

Yeah, this one feels different.

Home

My life is composed of an active and inquisitive preschooler, a tenacious and advancing toddler, and a wonderful and supportive wife. Schedules are now stable and my 60-hour work week melds around my family life. It doesn’t make for very exciting writing but it is a great environment to raise kids… and enjoy doing so.

Work

This last year was a hard year at FireGiant. Midway through the year we hit a technical mine that I expect could kill a more fragile startup. We finished up the year running down a security vulnerability that hit the entire setup community seemingly out of nowhere.

Fortunately, we have real customers at FireGiant and our developers find solutions for hard problems. So despite a hard year, we are still on solid footing and working for that better future.

Next

Which brings me to the point where I look forward to the next year. The challenges last year did nothing to damper my excitement for the coming year. Like last year, I remain: expectant.

You can already see bits of the future coming from FireGiant. FireGiant customers can see even more. Like last year, my hope is all of it becomes available this year.

In the meantime, keep coding. You know I am!
